Consultation on the Kaituna River Document

Te Maru o Kaituna River Authority Te Maru o Kaituna River Authority members include Tapuika Iwi Authority Trust, Te Tāhuhu o Tawakeheimoa Trust, Te Kapu o Waitaha, Te Pumautanga o Te Arawa Trust, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, the Rotorua Lakes Council, the Tauranga City Council, and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council. Ngati Whakaue are currently observers on Te Maru o Kaituna until such time as membership for Ngati Whakaue may be formalised through Treaty of Waitangi settlement legislation. Their purpose is to promote the restoration, protection and enhancement of the environmental, cultural and spiritual health well-being of the Kaituna River. Ngāti Whakaue Assets Trust Update

The Assets Trust held its annual Special General Meeting at Whakaue Marae, Maketu on 16 April 2016. The purpose of the hui was to provide the tribe with an update of both the investment and distribution decisions of the Trust, as well as to invite tribal input into the distribution policies for the next year. Membership turnout of 30 members was positive, although just short of the required quorum of 35. As such resolutions were deferred until the AGM on Sun 25th September 2016. The Trust reported net assets of $14,778.127, spread across a diversified portfolio of forestry, property, mining, bonds, equities and cash investments. Haerenga ki Mokaihaha

Late last year Iwi members including Wai claimants, were hosted by the Department of Conservation on a haerenga ki Mokaihaha at the request of Te Komiti Nui. Mokaihaha is an important ecological site in the Mamaku area.   This ‘taka i te whenua’ allowed whanau to walk the land and for some it was their first time. For most of the past 120 years our people have been disenfranchised from these iconic lands.  DOC openly discussed the use of 1080 to control possums and responded to the concerns raised regarding its effects on the environment.  Whanau were also able to witness the calls of the rarely seen kokako as dawn broke.
