Read more →A settlement update hui was held in Maketu on 21 February both to give an overview of the current negotiations landscape and also to respond to any queries that iwi members and claimants had. The hui was well attended and Lead Negotiator Hamuera Mitchell was available to provide a summary of progress since the AGM took place in October 2015 and Te Komiti Nui left with a strong message from the people that the marine and costal environment are instrumental to the well-being of Ngati Whakaue ki Maketu. On the 12 April, Te Komiti Nui had good attendance at the Hurungaterangi settlement update hui where an overview was provided to hapu and claimants in regard to the current negotiations status.
Read more →This pānui updates you and your whanau on progress to date with our Treaty of Waitangi Settlement Negotiations. The momentum in Negotiations has increased and Negotiators, along with the Board, are working hard to agree redress for an Agreement in Principle with the Crown. While we are not able to go into detail about negotiations due to our confidentiality agreement with the Crown, we can advise that progress towards an Agreement in Principle is going well and we will provide more detail around its content as soon as possible. Upcoming Elections and AGM Te Komiti Nui o Ngati Whakaue Trust deed requires us to hold elections this year. We are hoping to hold these elections and the AGM in October.
Read more →Thank you to all those who attended the Ordinary General Meeting on Sunday 21 December at Te Papaiouru Marae. At that hui, Te Komiti Nui presented on the process to appoint the four Negotiators: Larissa Wharepouri, Hamuera Mitchell, John Kahukiwa and Paora Tapsell. The Negotiators gave presentations, answered questions and listened to korero from Wai Claimants and whanau. The Negotiators also tabled a presentation which outlined key principles for the Ngati Whakaue comprehensive settlement. Next steps for the settlement negotiations Negotiators will meet with Wai Claimants/whanau regarding their claim in the context of the comprehensive settlement; Negotiators, with oversight from the Board, will continue to work to on developing a settlement package with Minister Finlayson, Chief Crown Negotiator Rick Barker,

Read more →What is Te Komiti Nui o Ngāti Whakaue? The entity mandated to negotiate the settlement of the historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of Ngāti Whakaue. Te Komiti Nui will settle the remaining historical claims such as claims relating to Maketu, Mamaku, Ohinemutu, Kouramawhitiwhiti, Ngongotaha, Ngāti Whakaue taonga and geothermal reserves. Ngati Whakaue have already been involved in some Treaty settlements for example the Township Railways Lands (1993), Te Arawa Lakes (2004), Te Arawa Fisheries (2004), CNI Forests Land (2008) and Whakarewarewa Valley and Roto a Tamaheke (2008). Te Komiti Nui will work with the Crown to settle the extant historical claims of Ngāti Whakaue. Read more →The Terms of Negotiation (TON) state how Kōmiti Nui and the Crown will negotiate, consult and engage with each other regarding the settlement process for Ngāti Whakaue. On 11 December 2013, representatives of Kōmiti Nui (supported by legal counsel) met with Honourable Chris Finlayson, Minister of Treaty Settlements and his officials to discuss the Crown process and time frame regarding the Terms of Negotiation. Since December 2013, Kōmiti Nui and the Office of Treaty Settlements have met regularly to progress the Terms of Negotiation. Kōmiti Nui intends to have this signed with the Crown by April 2014.
